BROWNWOOD -- The St. Paul defense slammed the door on Lubbock Christian in the second half and the Cardinals scored four unanswered touchdowns to grab a come-from-behind 48-21 win and reach the TAPPS Division IV state championship game.

The Cardinals, 13-0, will face Colleyville Covenant, a 35-20 winner over Amarillo Arbor Christian Saturday, for the state title at noon Saturday, Dec. 4 at Killeen's Leo Buckley Stadium.

Lubbock Christian battled St. Paul at Brownwood’s fabled Gordon Wood Stadium and took a 21-20 halftime lead after two St. Paul conversions failed.

The Cardinals struck first on a 1-yard run by Adam Hollenbach at the 7:56 mark of the opening period, and took a 14-0 lead when Devin Pesek hit Martin Kennedy with a 31-yard scoring pass and St. Paul converted a two-point try.

LCHS came back with a 4-yard scoring pass from Michael Sanders to Jordan Hoffman to make it 14-7 after one quarter of play.

Hollenbach scored again on a 16-yard run early in the second period, but LCHS blocked the PAT try. Lubbock Christian struck back quickly when Sanders hit Marshall Smith with a 52-yard scoring pass, then took the lead at intermission when Sanders connected with Hoffman on another 4- yard scoring pass. Smith’s PAT gave LCHS a 21-20 lead.

The St. Paul defense made its adjustments at halftime, however. Although Sanders finished 22 of 46 passing for 310 yards, the Cardinal defense limited LCHS to negative-one yards rushing and picked off two passes while throwing a second-half shutout.

A 10-yard TD run by Hollenbach and two-point conversion put the Cardinals on top for good, and Brandon Sciba’s 25-yard TD run and Cole Hybner’s PAT kick cushioned the lead for St. Paul.

Hollenbach extended his own TAPPS state scoring record with two more touchdowns in the final period on runs of 3 and 4 yards. He finished with 161 rushing yards on 30 carries, while Kennedy carried seven times for 90 yards and Sciba added 64 ground yards on eight carries. Pesek finished 4 of 7 passing for 128 yards, including a 64-yard strike to Justin Natal.
