SHINER -- It’s been six days since the St. Paul football team beat Sacred Heart.

The Cardinals have a renewed confidence now.

But there is one thing St. Paul coach Paul Johnston wants to protect his team against -- a letdown.

St. Paul (7-2, 2-1 in TAPPS District 3-Division IV) closes out the regular season against St. Dominic Savio (2-7, 1-2 in TAPPS District 3-IV) at 7:30 p.m. today at Comanche Field in Shiner. While the Cardinals have a better record than the Eagles, Johnston still wants his team to take the opposition seriously.

"We have to make sure our kids don’t overlook them," Johnston said. "They’re still a good team, and this is their first senior class."

St. Dominic is in its second year of varsity football, and this is the first senior class at the school. The Eagles operate out of the spread, the I-formation and offset-I.

"They mix the run and the pass," Johnston said. "They have a good running back and the quarterback is a good passer who can also run."

Daniel Miksch is St. Dominic’s quarterback, and his top receiver is Daniel Minor. The Eagles’ leading rusher is Michael Harrell.

Defensively, St. Dominic operates out of man-to-man coverage. Johnston said his team will likely see blitzes all night.

"Against running teams, they’ll load up the box," he said. "Against the spread, they’ve been known to man up on the receivers and leave everyone else in the box to blitz. We have to block better tonight."

Where St. Paul ends up in the playoffs depends on what happens between Sacred Heart and Brazos Christian. If the Cardinals and Brazos Christian both win, St. Paul will be the No. 2 seed out of District 3-IV.

If the Cardinals and Sacred Heart both win, the teams will share the district championship with Brazos Christian. However, St. Paul would be the No. 3 seed because of the points tiebreaker.

The top two seeds in the district host playoff games in the first round.
