SHINER — The Cardinals wanted to start the season the same way they ended it last season.

By winning a football game.

Sure enough, Shiner St. Paul did just that as they took care of business at home against Yorktown for the 35-14 win.

The Cardinals held Yorktown scoreless until late in the fourth quarter before the visiting Wildcats finally found their way to the end zone on big plays.

The tone was set in the first quarter when the Cardinals were fortunate to get a safety after a bad snap from Yorktown sailed over their punter’s head to give St. Paul two points.

Later in the quarter, T.J. Bell would score from four yards to give St. Paul their first touchdown of the night. Their second came from Ryan Geiger who dashed for a 26-yard run to give the home team the 17-0 lead.

T.J. Bell found the end zone twice more in the second quarter, adding 12 points to the building lead for the Cardinals.

St. Paul’s final score of the night came midway through the third when quarterback Austin Barton through one of his six passes to Colton Machart for the 20-yard touchdown.

Barton would finish the night going five of six for 56 yards and a score.

Yorktown would attempt their comeback in the fourth quarter after scoring from a Jonathan Weischwell’s 83-yard run.

However it seemed it was too little, too late as the Wildcats scored again, except with 51 seconds left in game clock, not enough time to give Woodsboro three more touchdowns to try to force an overtime.

The score would remain 35-14 in favor of the Cardinals.

T.J. Bell led the team in rushing with 12 attempts for 143 yards and three scores. Ryan Geiger had three rushes for 49 yards and a score.

St. Paul hopes to continue this streak this Friday as they travel to take on Bryan St. Joseph, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m.
