Shiner St. Paul Cardinal Football SHINER — The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals (6-0, 3-0) have been fortunate enough to stay unbeaten, despite the mistakes they’ve made so far whether it’s turnovers, penalties or giving up big plays.

Head coach Jake Wachsmuth is continuing to push the team to clean up the mistakes and hopes the Cardinals can improve on those aspects of their game as they take on the San Antonio St. Gerard Royals (2-5, 0-3) ( on Friday October 20, 2017 ).

“Obviously we’ve been able to win,” Wachsmuth said, “[but we have to] eliminate some penalties and turnovers. On the defensive end, we played really good against John Paul II, except for two plays and those were two big plays. Hopefully we can be more consistent and not turn the ball over.”

The Cardinals will be facing against a St. Gerard team that has shown a tendency to run the ball.

“They got a couple good skill kids that if they get loos, I don’t think we can catch them,” Wachsmuth noted.

The offense is similar to what St. Paul runs, with a lot of two or three-back formations.

“I see some things that look similar to our plays like powers and leads,” Wachsmuth scouted.

Defensively, St. Gerard runs a 4-3, though last season they have shown odd fronts against the Cardinals.

With this being St. Gerard Head Coach Vincent Mendez’s third year, Wachsmuth has noticed a much improved squad.

“This is probably the first time since I’ve been at St. Paul that you can see that they’re building a program,” he said. “They’re improved and I think they’ve done a great job.”

The Cardinals were penalized for over 100 yards last week. For the team to find success against St. Gerard, those drive-killing penalties need to be minimized.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. in Shiner.
