The St. Paul Cardinals remained undefeated Friday night (September 18, 2015) with a 19-0 victory over the Flatonia Bulldogs.

Near the end of the first quarter, T.J. Bell, who had 131 rushing yards on the night, ran the ball in from the 1 yard line to open up the scoring for the Cardinals. The extra point kick by Austin Barton put the Cardinals up 7-0.

St. Paul scored again midway through the second quarter on a 13 yard pass from Barton to Ryan Geiger. Cardinal defense, including 2 fumble recoveries by Conor Kresta, held strong against Flatonia’s passing game and sent them into halftime with a 13-0 lead.

The third quarter saw some steady drives but no scoring from the St. Paul offense. Flatonia started to pick up momentum near the end of the third quarter and heading into the fourth, nearly scoring on a pass into the end zone.

However, St. Paul shut them down on the very next play with a huge interception by Nathan Pilat. Coach Jake Wachsmuth described that moment as key and said, "If Flatonia had scored there, it’s a one touchdown game and who knows."

After that interception, the Cardinals worked the ball back down the field for one more Bell rushing touchdown to finish out the game. St. Paul ran for 292 yards on 49 carries over the course of the night including 77 yards from Jed Janecek on 6 touches. Barton completed 2 of his 6 attempted passes and ran for 37 yards as well.

Even with their shut out victory, the Cardinals had improvement on their minds.

Wachsmuth said, "Flatonia’s a lot better football team than the others we’ve played this season. It’s obviously good to beat someone that’s pretty good, that’s been good over the last several years. Still, there’s a lot of things we need to do better. We found out a lot of things we need to work on tonight, where we didn’t find those things over the last couple weeks."

Geiger added, "I feel like we did some good things and some bad things. Overall, I thought we played well enough to pull out the win and that’s really what matters. The defense really helped us out a lot out there. I feel like we have some momentum going into district."

The Cardinals will open district play at home on Friday (September 25, 2015) at 7:30 against Schertz John Paul II.
