On a soggy night (November 27, 2015) in The Woodlands, the St. Paul Cardinals played
their way to a 56-20 TAPPS Division III State Semifinals win over Beaumont Legacy Christian
and earned themselves a spot in this week's state championship game.
St. Paul scored their first touchdown within the first minute of the game on an 11- yard run
from T.J Bell who had 135 total rushing yards on the night. From there, the points just kept
rolling.
The Cards put up three more touchdowns in the first quarter, one on a 38 yard pass from Austin
Barton to Ryan Geiger and the other two on Barton runs of 77- and 21-yards.
Overall on the night, Barton had 264 yards total offense – 139 rushing yards on 10 touches
including his two touchdowns, completed 5 of his 8 pass attempts for 125 passing yards and two
more touchdowns, and kicked 7 of 7 successful extra points.
The Cardinals added two more touchdowns in the second quarter on a 1-yard run by Bell and a
Bell reception on a 12-yard Barton pass. They allowed the Warriors one touchdown in each of
the first two quarters, one in the air and one on the ground, and went into halftime with a
42-14 lead.
In the second half, St. Paul made two more trips into the end zone, one in each quarter, both
on runs by Jed Janacek, who led the team with 161 rushing yards. They surrendered one more
Warrior touchdown on a short 1-yard pass, but their lead was plenty to secure the semifinal
win.
St. Paul (13-0) will face Cedar Hill Trinity Christian (10-3) for the TAPPS Division III State
Championship on Friday (December 4, 2015) at Bastrop Memorial Stadium. Kickoff will be
at 7:30 p.m.
