The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals fell in the 2016 season opener on the road to Yorktown on Friday, 16-6, despite a good offensive output.
The Cardinals (0-1) took the lead with under three minutes elapsed in the game as quarterback Austin Barton ran 52 yards for a touchdown. The point after was missed but St. Paul was ahead 6-0 at the 9:43 mark of the first quarter.
The Wildcats answered with a short touchdown pass from Jayden Webb to Nathan London and Ysrido Garza converted the two-point conversion run, giving Yorktown an 8-6 advantage.
A 4-yard touchdown run by Cy Streiber and a two-point run by Ryan Zuniga upped the 'Cats' advantage to 16-6 with 5:08 left in the first half.
Barton led St. Paul on offense as he ran for 121 yards and completed 8-of-23 passing for 105 yards.
Noah Leist had two catches for 44 and Joseph Natal had two grabs for 21 yards.
