St. Paul takes on Beaumont Legacy Academy for the second straight year in the postseason. The game will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday ( November 18, 2016 ) in The Woodlands.

Last year, the Cardinals won 56-20 in the state semifinals.

"They were a good team last year and are good this year," St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. "They have lots of speed and we cannot let their offensive players get away from us."

The Warriors run their offense out of the shotgun but aren't necessarily a spread team.

"They line up with two backs in the shotgun and will throw it when it is a one-back gun set," he said. "I feel they throw better. We need to keep the receivers in front of us, pursue and tackle well."

Quarterback Tavian Mayfield has completed 84-of-161 passes for 1,596 yards for 23 touchdowns and six interceptions. Receiver Taydren Espirit has 48 catches for 1,119 yards and 14 touchdowns.

On the ground, Tristan Ozmun has 568 rushing yards and six touchdowns while Mayfield has 562 yards and nine touchdowns.

Last year, St. Paul was able to make some big plays on offense.

Wachsmuth said this year they need to control and possess the football.

"We need to play like we have been playing and not have any turnovers," he said.
