Weimar Wildcats @ St. Paul Cardinals

The Cardinals are back home for the first time since September 7 and will be there for a while as they host Weimar for Homecoming ( tomorrow, Friday, September 28, 2018 ).

The Wildcats are 2-1 on the season after opening with a 43-0 win at Manor New Tech, dropping a close 28-21 to Schulenburg and rebounding with half a hundred in a 50-29 route of Austin St. Michael’s.

St. Paul fell to Yorktown 34-7 to open the season, was edged by Victoria St. Joseph 21-20, lost on the road to Austin Saints 31-7 and came very close to getting a win at Cypress Christian last week.

The Wildcats’ offense will be the first run-heavy system St. Paul has played against.

“They have several good running backs and quarterback, and will run the ball 75 percent of the time,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said.

Weimar runs out of pro-style formations although they will get in the shotgun.

Quarterback Clay Barton had hit 8-of-14 passes for 169 yards and one touchdown. The majority of Weimar’s offense has come from running back Rayvondre Wicks (14-148 rushing, two touchdowns) and running back Reed Purdy (20-142 rushing, three touchdowns).

Receiver Davondre Almeida has seven catches for 131 yards and both of Weimar’s receiving touchdowns.

“We will have to contain the speed of their skilled players,” Wachsmuth said. “Even though Weimar does not throw the ball often, we need to pressure them and take the pass away when they do pass the ball.”

On defense, the ‘Cats run a 3-3 stack system.

St. Paul made improvements on offense last week against Cypress Christian but did struggle with penalties and execution, and was unable to score on a couple of drives inside the red zone.

“When we get those opportunities on offense, we need to finish off those drives,” Wachsmuth said.
