St. Paul plays in their final district game against Austin Brentwood Christian at Comanche Stadium tomorrow ( Friday, October 12, 2018 ).

“They are a pretty good team and are much improved from last year,” St. Paul head coach Jake Wachsmuth said.

Last year, St. Paul and Brentwood were in the same district, and the Cardinals opened district with the Bears, scoring a late touchdown for a 20-14 victory.

The Bears are on a roll with five wins in five games. They opened with a 21-0 win at Brazos Christian, won at Texas School for the Deaf 29- 14, routed San Antonio TMI Episcopal 45-13, and have earned two shutouts in a row, 45-0 against Schertz John Paul II (45-0) and Austin Savio (36-0).

So far teams have averaged just over five points a game against the Bears; Brentwood is average 35 points a game.

Brentwood Christian runs out of several formations: traditional pro set, two-back shotgun, formations where tight ends are split wide and one called ‘diamond’ where the quarterback is in the shotgun with a back to both sides to him and one behind him.

The Bears are averaging 281 rushing yards a game and are led by Sam Orick (57-480, 6 touchdowns) and Blake Benton (48-323, 7 touchdowns). In the passing game, Benton has hit 22-of- 58 for 333 yards, four touchdowns and four interceptions. Zack Billante has nine catches for 147 yards and a touchdown while Orick had four catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns.

On the Bears defense, Curtis Mack is the leading tackler with 55 on the season.

Wachsmuth said he wants to see improved execution from the Cardinals offense and defense.

“We need to be playing our best on every single snap,” Wachsmuth said. “We need to eliminate breakdowns.”
