The St. Paul Cardinals got close to the top of the hump of getting that first win but were unable to get over it Friday ( October 12, 2018 ) against Austin Brentwood Christian.

The Bears rallied from a 21-17 deficit in the final 10 minutes of the game for a 31-21 win.

“We made some progress; we just have to get over that hump,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “We were down (17-14) at halftime and did not start the second half great. Gave Brentwood great field position. It looked like we were starting to figure some things out. We score (to take the lead) and then they hit us with a big play.

Wachsmuth said St. Paul did some good things but stressed the team just needs to get over the hump.

“We can win games but we just have to do it,” he said.

The Bears received the opening kickoff and on third down from their 30, Blake Benton passed a screen ball to running back Sam Orick who took it the distance for an apparent touchdown but a holding call at the Cardinal 18 wiped out the score.

Brentwood got as far as the St. Paul 9 but a third-down option play went for negative yardage and the Bears settled for a Jonah Connor field goal.

On their first offensive series, St. Paul converted a third-and-9 with a 12-yard run by quarterback Kai Giese but the drive later stalled and the Cardinals punted. Brentwood went three and out, and had a short punt of 18 to their 45.

Joseph Natal had a 23-yard run to the 22 and Giese took it to the 6 on a bootleg. Two plays later, Natal got in from the 1 and St. Paul led 7-3.

The Bears on the next drive, despite a fumble, got to their own 36 and faced fourth down. Connor took the snap as Brentwood looked like it would punt but instead, he ran the ball 42 yards to the St. Paul 22 to continue the drive. Orick had a 3-yard TD run for a 10-7 lead with 8:21 left in the second quarter.

The Bears got a defensive stop and then drove 65 yards, scoring on a Benton-to-Orick pass of 49 yards.

The Cardinals answered with a 62-yard drive. Natal had a 12-yard gain to the 50 on the first play; Noah Boedeker had a 10-yard fullback counter to convert a third down and Giese ran for 24 to give St. Paul another first down to the Bear 12. Giese threw incomplete on third down from the 11 but a roughing-the-passer call moved the ball to the 6 and St. Paul scored on a 6-yard throw from Giese to Boedeker, cutting the deficit to 17-14.

At the start of the third quarter. St. Paul went three and out, giving the Bears the ball at the Cardinal 35. Two flags for 15 yards and some incomplete passes melted the drive for the Bears and they punted.

St. Paul went three and out on the next drive but caught a break as Orick had a 9-yard run to the St. Paul 5 where he fumbled and St. Paul’s Grant Barta got the ball at the 4. Natal and Giese combined to get the Cardinals all the way to the 48 of Brentwood.

Natal had an 8-yard run and Brentwood helped with a personal foul to move the ball to the 25. Natal had a second-down run of 25 to the 3 and scored on the next play to give St. Paul a 21-17 lead with 10:24 left in the game.

Orick scored on a 75-yard run as the Bears answered in one play. They recovered a fumble on the next drive at the St. Paul 48 and scored on a 31-yard run by Orick on the fourth play at the 6:47 mark.

St. Paul refused to give up and converted a fourth down with a 5-yard catch by Boedeker to the Cardinal 35. St. Paul eventually got to the Bear 40 but turned it over on downs.

Defensively for St. Paul, Kellen Opela had two tackles, two assists; Boedeker had two tackles, one assist, one fumble caused. Dalton Jahn had three tackles for loss, one tackle, one assist; Zak Johnson had three tackles; Natal had three tackles, one tackle for loss, one assist. Carson Reese had nine tackles, eight assists, one fumble caused; Cole Brown had two assists, one tackle, one fumble caused. Patrick Green added four tackles, three assists; Luke Darilek had four assists, two tackles, one tackle for loss; Garrett Wauson had five tackles, two tackles for loss and Barta had three assists, two tackles to go along with his fumble recovery.
