Cardinals host Sacred Heart

This week, the Shiner Comanches have their long-awaited bye week after nine consecutive weeks of games. The Comanches close out the regular season next week at home against Wallis Brazos. The Shiner St. Paul Cardinals come out of their off date to host rival Hallettsville Sacred Heart.

The Cardinals welcome the Indians from Sacred Heart for St. Paul’s last regular-season home game on Friday ( November 2, 2018 ) at 7:30 p.m.
The Indians are 6-2 and 1-0 in district. They have defeated Legacy Prep, Louise, Nixon-Smiley, San Marcos Academy, San Antonio St. Gerard and San Antonio TMI Episcopal.
Both teams are coming off an open date last week.
“We had a real good off week,” Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. “Since both teams were open last week, we took it as we had a game last week.”
The Indians come out in a two-back or one-back spread looks with good players at the skilled position.
Wachsmuth said Sacred Heart’s offense runs through the abilities of quarterback Sam Brown.
The Indians run a similar defense to St. Paul, eight-man fronts and some 4-3 formations.
“Sacred Heart is very solid on defense,” he said. “We just have to make sure we execute and protect the ball.”
St. Paul’s last game was a 34-13 win over Temple Central Texas Christian to start district.
That win has provided momentum which has provided confidence and boosted the intensity of St. Paul’s workouts since.
“Our kids usually practice very well all season. Our win is helping us practice better,” Wachsmuth said.
He said the game with Sacred Heart is always a fun one and one that usually results in a packed stadium.
St. Paul ends the regular season next Thursday at San Antonio St. Gerard.
