St. Paul preferred a better outcome in their season opener, but a season does not ride on the first game.

The Flatonia Bulldogs muscled their way past St. Paul, through the air and the ground, and played solid defense in blanking the Cardinals 35-0 Friday night at Comanche Stadium.
"The first game does not win or lose you anything," Cardinals head coach Jake Wachsmuth said. "Certainly, we would like it to be better than what this game was. There is a lot of football left and we just have to learn from this game. I still think we can be a good team; we have to learn from tonight."
St. Paul had trouble on solid execution and had one too many miscues.
"We are not very consistent. In the first half, we moved the ball but we made too many mistakes," Wachsmuth said. "Flatonia is good and made a lot of plays. We did a lot of things to help them. Flatonia made a few mistakes; just did not make as many as we did. We have a lot of work to do."
The Cardinals had an okay start to the game as they drove the ball past the 50 in 14 plays and used over eight minutes of clock but the drive did not end all that well as the Cardinals punted.
Venegas completed his first two passes to total 53 yards to move Flatonia inside of the St. Paul 30. His third pass ended up in the hands of Trent Brown. The Cardinals went three and out, and punted. Flatonia drove 64 yards in two plays - Venegas found Green for a 49-yard pass on the first play of the second quarter and the 'Dogs led 6-0 after missing the extra point.
St. Paul got good field position at the 50 after a kickoff went out of bounds. They drove down to inside the Flatonia 10, getting good production from the running game but could not convert a 4thand- 2 from the 'Dog 8.
Green gained 40 yards on a reverse and 10 plays later, on a fourth down from the Cardinal 11, Venegas hit Reese Ramirez for a touchdown pass and Green made the two-point run to put Flatonia ahead 14-0 with 2:22 left in the first half.
Venegas had a 4-yard run to cap a 61-yard drive on the first possession of the third quarter. Another punt for St. Paul netted a big return for Flatonia and penalty moved the ball further to the 8 of St. Paul. The Cardinals defense later held up on fourth down.
St. Paul later lost a fumble at its 11 and Flatonia scored two plays later on an 16-yard run by Green on the last play of the third quarter.
Flatonia forced another punt and had another productive return as Jaidyn Guyton ran it back 75 yards for the final score of the night. The Cards lost another fumble and Flatonia ran out the clock as it worked on its running game.
