The chance to be a head football coach for the first time wasn’t all that attracted Jake Wachsmuth to Shiner St. Paul.
"I’ve wanted to be a head coach," Wachsmuth said. "Of course, I’ve explored other opportunities. But there’s my faith, my kids and what’s best for my family. There’s a lot of advantages for my family and me."
Wachsmuth will take over as St. Paul’s head coach in the upcoming season. He replaces Gary Harvey, who decided to retire after one season to spend more time with his children and grandchildren.
Wachsmuth will also be the Cardinals’ head basketball coach.
"I’ve looked at coaching at a private school before," Wachsmuth said. "I know other people don’t look at them a lot. I think it can be a good thing."
Wachsmuth has been the defensive coordinator and head track and field coach at Ingleside for the past four years. He previously spent three seasons as the defensive coordinator at Tuloso-Midway.
Wachsmuth is no stranger to the Advocate-area as he coached for three seasons at Calhoun when his father, John, was the athletic director and head football coach.
Wachsmuth said he plans to meet with St. Paul athletic director Dana Beal this week and will begin his coaching duties when the Cardinals report for preseason drills in August.
St. Paul advanced to the TAPPS Division IV semifinals last season before finishing with a 5-6 record.
The Cardinals will compete in Division IV, District 3 in the upcoming season against Hallettsville Sacred Heart, New Braunfels Christian, Bryan Brazos Christian, San Antonio St. Gerard and Waco Texas Christian.
