SHINER - It was like night and day.

The first half of the TAPPS Division III, District 3 championship game between Shiner St. Paul and Hallettsville Sacred Heart belonged to the Indians who maintained possession of the ball for more than half of the first quarter.

The Indians (4-5) scored twice in the first quarter on runs of 9 yards by Dylan Jahn and 1 yard by Braden Jansky.

Sacred Heart had the momentum, but St. Paul (8-2) knew it needed something on the scoreboard going into halftime.

"They really put it to us in the first half," said St. Paul coach Jake Wachsmuth. "They came to play, and we told our kids that we didn't. When it's only a five point game at the half, that makes a big difference."

After moving the ball twice on runs of 15 yards and 37 yards, junior T.J. Bell ran the ball 6 yards up the middle for the Cardinals' first touchdown with 18 seconds left in the first half.

"They got the momentum there," said Sacred Heart coach Pat Henke. "I thought we dominated the first half but when they scored right there before the half, we just made a mental mistake on defense. In the second half, we just turned the ball over."

St. Paul took the district championship and bragging rights with a 41-13 victory over Sacred Heart. The Cardinals scored four touchdowns and rushed 20 times for 212 yards in the second half.

Wachsmuth called the first and second half of the annual rivalry game "two different worlds."

In the lockerroom during halftime, Bell said the coaches reminded the team they were still in the game.

"(Wachsmuth) said if we played our game, we would for sure to come out with a win," Bell said.

Being an area leader in rushing yards, Bell's game is to take the ball and run.

After's Friday's win, Bell has 1,455 yards rushing and 28 touchdowns. Bell scored five touchdowns Friday.

It wasn't all big runs by Bell that gave the Cardinals the win. Defense and key opportunities provided St. Paul the chance to keep possession of the ball for most of the third and fourth quarters.

Junior Marco Ynclan intercepted two passes for St. Paul in the second half and blocked a punt which put the Cardinals in a key position to score a few plays later.

"Those were his first two interceptions tonight and his first blocked kick," Wachsmuth said. "The kid's played great all year. Honestly, he hasn't been in those spots. I can't think of many times that people have thrown at him. So they did, and he made plays, and that's what we ask our kids to do when you get a chance to make a play, and he made three big ones tonight."

Jed Janecek also intercepted the ball late in the fourth quarter before running 20 yards for the final St. Paul touchdown.

Ynclan remembers what it was like being on a losing Cardinal team last season, and he said this year has been a major change.

"We've all played together, and it's been great for us," Ynclan said. "It was an eye opener for us, and we knew we had to come back and train harder."

Henke said he is disappointed with how the Indians performed in the second half.

"The first half, I thought we played as best as we could, but the second half, too many bad things happened," Henke said. "We gave up too many big plays and didn't do anything offensively."

Sacred Heart relies on two quarterbacks, Hunter Janak and Braden Popp, to move the ball down the field in addition to their power running backs. Combined, the two completed 4 passes for 11 attempts and 27 yards.

With the last district game in San Antonio next week against St. Gerard, Henke said the team will reflect on how they lost this game to St. Paul, and go back to work.
